ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Corben Green singled in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, and Kenny Roberts hit his second home run in as many games, but Willmar fell to the Rox, 18-5, Tuesday night at Joe Faber Field.
Roberts (Alabama) gave the Stingers their only lead of the game in the second inning with a two-out solo home run to left-center field to put Willmar (23-18) in front, 1-0. Roberts’ eight home runs rank second in the Northwoods League, and 18 of his 26 RBIs have come with two outs in an inning this year.
Following Roberts’ home run, St. Cloud responded in a big way with four runs in the bottom of the second and five more in the third to take a 9-2 lead. Three of the runs were unearned, as the Stingers committed three errors in the two innings and a total of six in the game.
Jonathon Flinn (Hawaii) fell to 1-3 this season after allowing eight runs – six earned – in two innings. Flinn surrendered six hits and three walks without a strikeout. Kody Gorden (Nevada) relieved Flinn and gave up six runs in 4.2 innings with five of them being earned. Gorden struck out three, but walked four allowed eight hits.
Down 18-3, Andre Wheeler (Texas Tech) led off the ninth inning with a walk, and Michael Suchy (Florida Gulf Coast) followed with a double. Green singled to left to score both runners to cap off a 2-for-4 night at the plate with two RBIs. Green now has 25 RBIs in 18 games with the team. His hitting streak of 16 games is the second longest in the Northwoods League this year and two games shy of cracking the top 10 all-time in Northwoods League history.
Suchy finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Max Kuhn scored the Stingers’ other run as part of a 1-for-4 performance.
Willmar plays at home for the first time in 10 days Wednesday night with a rematch against St. Cloud at 7:05 p.m. The game is sold out for Kandiyohi Power Cooperative Night.
